Doing justice to an epic soundtrack

When the visuals are projected across the sails of the Sydney Opera House, the audio needs to keep up.

Opera Mundi, a major new commission by renowned French multimedia artist Yann Nguema and his studio Anima Lux, is a powerful ode to transformations in nature, land, sea, and sky, drawing on the organic architecture of Jørn Utzon's design to animate microcosms into luminous, kinetic forms across the iconic sails. The original score is composed by Romanian neo-classical and electronic composer Mischa Blanos, blending classical and electronic music to complement Nguema's generative visual language.

An epic soundtrack like Blanos's deserved to be heard properly. The challenge is that a PA system can only do so much. With a viewing area stretching across the forecourt and out across the harbour, and one of Sydney's busiest precincts generating constant ambient noise, even the best speaker setup struggles to deliver a consistent, immersive experience to every viewer. Event Sync gives every visitor a personal listening experience wherever they’re standing.

Immersive audio, instantly accessible

Event Sync offered visitors a simple solution: follow a link to launch the synchronised audio instantly in a mobile browser, with no app download required. The streamlined experience is particularly valuable for an audience including many international tourists who might have concerns about using their data to download a native app.

Using their own headphones or earbuds, visitors could step out of the surrounding noise and into Blanos's score, playing in perfect sync with Nguema's sweeping visual sequences, for an intimate encounter with a monumental work.

A proven integration for projection mapping

Opera Mundi was produced with show control already established for the projection. Event Sync's UDP integration has become a popular choice for projection mapping installations precisely because of how cleanly it fits into existing media server setups. Event Sync’s desktop app runs on a dedicated laptop connected via Ethernet, listening for UDP triggers triggered by the media server. The laptop can be positioned anywhere on-site as long as it’s connected to the same network, keeping the setup flexible without interrupting an established setup. Once configured Event Sync is set and forget for the rest of the festival.
